Στα βιβλία μου —από το «Το Μοντέλο ως Πρόσωπο», που έχει ενταχθεί στη βιβλιογραφία μεταπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων του ΕΑΠ και του ΕΚΠΑ, έως το «Φως της Ρωγμής»— επιχειρώ να φέρω τη φωτογραφία σε διάλογο με την ψυχανάλυση, τη φαινομενολογία και τη θεολογία του Προσώπου. Στο κέντρο αυτής της έρευνας βρίσκεται ένα ερώτημα: μπορεί το βλέμμα να πάψει να είναι πράξη κατοχής και να γίνει τόπος συνάντησης;

Books & Research

The desire to understand what truly happens in the moment when two gazes meet led me beyond photographic practice and into writing and research.

In my books—from The Model as Person, which has been included in the bibliography of postgraduate programmes at the Hellenic Open University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, to The Light of the Crack—I bring photography into dialogue with psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and the theology of the person. At the heart of this inquiry lies a fundamental question: Can the gaze cease to be an act of possession and become a place of encounter?

In parallel, through my educational books Seeing – Directing – Speaking and The Light That Reveals, this theoretical inquiry meets photographic practice. My aim is not simply to teach technique, but to cultivate a kind of “grammar of light”: to know technique so deeply that, at the moment of taking the photograph, the photographer can finally forget it and become fully present.

For me, ultimately, photography is not simply the production of images. It is an act of witness. It is the trace left by the fact that two human beings stood before one another—and that something true was able to reveal itself without being betrayed.

Η αγωνία να καταλάβω τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει τη στιγμή που δύο βλέμματα συναντιούνται με οδήγησε από τη φωτογραφική πράξη στη συγγραφή και την έρευνα. Στα βιβλία μου, από το «Το Μοντέλο ως Πρόσωπο», που έχει ενταχθεί στη βιβλιογραφία μεταπτυχιακών προγραμμάτων του ΕΑΠ και του ΕΚΠΑ, μέχρι το «Φως της Ρωγμής» προσπαθώ να φέρω τη φωτογραφία σε διάλογο με την ψυχανάλυση, τη φαινομενολογία και τη θεολογία του Προσώπου. Στο κέντρο μένει πάντα το ίδιο ερώτημα: μπορεί το βλέμμα να πάψει να είναι πράξη κατοχής και να γίνει τόπος συνάντησης;

From the aperture of the lens to the crack in the soul. A journey that began as a lesson in photography and ended as an exercise in being.”

The need to understand what actually happens in the moment when two gazes meet is what took me from photographic practice into writing and research.

In my books — from The Model as Person, now included in the bibliography of postgraduate programmes at the Hellenic Open University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, to The Light of the Crack — I try to bring photography into conversation with psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and the theology of the Person. At the centre of this work sits one question: can the gaze stop being an act of possession and become a place of encounter?

The same question returns in my educational books Seeing – Directing – Speaking and The Light That Reveals. There the theoretical search meets practice again. I am not interested only in teaching technique. What I want is for the photographer to acquire a kind of “grammar of light” — to know the technical side so thoroughly that, at the moment of taking the photograph, they can finally forget it and simply be present.

In the end, photography is not, for me, the production of images. It is an act of witness. It is the trace left behind when two people stood in front of each other and something true was allowed to appear without being betrayed.
